This course unit gives you a comprehensive introduction to Oral Literature. In this course unit we will discuss the different forms of African Oral Literature. It has been designed to explore our different but rich creative verbal arts so that you are equipped with the knowledge and skills to teach Literature and Language using materials from your own or your students’ cultural settings. The theoretical focus will mostly be on the application of ethnomethodology and structural anthropology to the study of African Oral Literature materials; however, you will engage in a critique of the use of theories in the appreciation of African Oral Literature. In this unit you will develop skills of using materials from your students’ cultural backgrounds and thereby creating relevance in pedagogy and also reconnecting students to their cultures and places.
